Give Peace A Chance, free quilt pattern by Rosemarie Lavin and Jean Ann Wright for the Feelin’ Groovy Fabric Collection at Windham Fabrics

Let’s hope peace breaks out among my irate customers, after I made the mistake of not realising how much was going to change now that I have upgraded to Sierra!  I really do apologise that the first “newz from julz” email I sent out after all these months, wasn’t private.

See : Whoops, I found a Glitch and A Digital Nightmare.

It seems I was wrong in my original explanation – I was searching for all the help info about the “contacts” software, and I couldn’t find a solution.  In the old version, there was a box to tick for any group you wanted to keep private, and because I’d put the mailing list groups together over the last few years, I didn’t even imagine that they no longer were PRIVATE!

I did finally did another test this morning, with my sister and a cousin – who wouldn’t mind each others email addresses being displayed, and I got the same result as I had with the mailing list!

Then I “asked Siri” but it couldn’t find an answer either, “he” directed me to Office, which I don’t use, and a discontinued BBC page – which actually mentioned the Bcc trick.

Then I had an online “conversation” with Apple Help and found that they hadn’t bothered putting a privacy facility into the new “contacts” software – because you just use the Bcc field for the group when you a send an email!

It’s simple isn’t it – but I do wish they had put a line about that in the support section for “contacts”, it would have saved me a lot of time and worry, and my customers a great deal of annoyance.

Sorry – promise for sure now that it won’t happen again!

So now I can send out another email to the mailing list to apologise to everyone, cos not many will have checked this blog!

Whoops – I found a glitch!

Standard

whoops!

Apologies to everyone on my mailing list,  I sent out a “newz from julz” update to you this morning, and whereas there was a facility on my old computer system, Mountain Lion, to hide all the addresses in a group, which I aways used, and I assumed it was the same with Sierra. (see Digital Nightmare!)

However, it seems they work on the basis that if you start a new group, you can decide then whether the email addresses in the group are available to everyone who gets it, or to keep them private – but there is no way to do this with a group already put together!

I couldn’t find a facility to do it any other way, and thought that because the old groups were already private, they would stay so!

I just got a “remove” email from someone, and the whole list of recipients was on it!

I got a real shock!

I promise you I won’t let this happen again, even if it means having to enter each separate email address into new group!

I really can’t apologise enough – but I honestly didn’t realise what was happening!

UPDATE – on 4 Sept:  The problem has now been resolved – please see

A DIGITAL NIGHTMARE – upgrading from Mac’s Mountain Lion OS to Sierra!

Standard

I’ve purposely turned this picture round cos the nature of this post is total confusion and I’m afraid a long meander – but maybe you will like it enough to read to the end!dr-seuss_be-who-you-areSee, the last post I wrote, about the landslip in Ystalyfera, well it nearly didn’t get published. Not only because I’d been loath to talk about it, and having lost my home of over 35 years, but because, once I’d finally decided to write it, I couldn’t find a way to Preview the blog OR Publish it!

If you look at the history my blog you will see that I’ve published posts on it since August 2012, and I even did the WordPress course on how to blog a couple of years ago, so I thought I knew my way around it pretty well.

I usually write my posts in draft form on the WordPress site, and they go thro’ many revisions, and often use the Preview button to check how its looking as well as reading it thro’ on line to see if it makes sense, which I find harder to do in the raw draft.

So that’s what I did – wrote the headline, decided to start with the photograph of the landslip – imported the photograph – decided to put a long introduction into the caption, messed around with how to do that – and then preview that part to see how it looked.

But OH – WHERE WAS THE PREVIEW BUTTON?  Granted I’ve had about 18 months off from blogging (see “Hallo Again”) and WordPress have changed some of their familiar formats – but surely they wouldn’t have left off a Preview facility? And ……… how do I publish it? There was a new column of stuff on the right hand side and I still couldn’t see how to Publish the Post when I was ready?

I have had my fallings out with blogging and the way WordPress keep changing things (message to matt mullenweg: Part 2), but I really didn’t think they’d mess up the system that much! Maybe, because they expect most people to write short blogs on their phones, they’d simplified things even more ‘when I was away’?

Well I’d get the post written and then deal with it! I had, after all, already written 2 posts in the last few weeks, and had been able to Preview & Publish easily enough.

It was a difficult piece to write, talking about the turmoil of my life, I usually consider this blog a showcase for the “business” part of me, and don’t write a lot of personal stuff in it – but I think that’s gonna change – Oh! I’ve already changed it haven’t I? And this is another ‘personal’ piece – in which I will attempt to make you laugh as well as cry!

DSCF2126

This is nothing to do with the text, just thought you might like to see the pair of bantams I told you about in the “call duck” post. The hen has gone broody, and so she’s sitting on 6 tiny eggs, in a cardboard shoebox! The cockerel was annoyed with me for coming into the shed with a camera, so he hopped up to protect her! They are both very small – I think possibly a cross of barbu d’uccle and sablefoot bantams.

So I left out a lot of the ups and downs of the last few months, and cut the story down to the bare minimum – after all, readers supposedly don’t have the patience to read thro’ a long piece, especially if they’re reading it on their phones – smile. Well this one is shaping up to be a long piece, and I haven’t even started on the story yet!

So I got to the end of that blog, and then I really did have a problem – it was saved in Draft, but I really couldn’t find a way to publish it!  Was that a sign that I shouldn’t put it “out there on the internet?” No, I’d decided to share it and share it I would.

So, I went looking for help. Navigated with difficulty the awkward support system in WordPress, to find someone to help me. Along the way I was directed to the “How to Write a Blog Page”, and noticed that yes, the page I had been working on normally had Preview and Publish buttons – but mine didn’t – Really it Didn’t!

Sometimes the “Happiness Engineers”, a term which always makes me laugh, get in contact with you immediately – there even used to be a box at the bottom of the page where you could ask for help, and someone would answer, and solve your problem.

But this time, the best I could do was start a new query, and ask for some advice from anyone who felt like giving it. So within a day, I had about 5 different people, from all over the world, trying to help me – and thank you very much to all of them – who were as stumped as I was.

We finally arrived at a solution to the problem. No it wasn’t WordPress’s fault – it was mine!  Well, my fault for wanting to stay in my comfort zone and use the systems and tools I was familiar with and had worked well for years.

But the digital world doesn’t stay still, and anyway, there have been security reasons to keep changing formats, and while I was still happy keeping my old operating system – mac’s MOUNTAIN LION – such a nice name – smile, the world had moved on.

I do get regular update options from Apple, but I choose which ones to download, because a lot of them are for things I don’t use anyway, and take up a lot of space on the computer for no good reason. eg: iTunes is always updating to convince you to spend money with them, and now there is even something called Apple Pay, to pay them with!

Thank you, but I’m happy enuf with stuff I’ve uploaded myself from my own collection, and stuff I found on the old systems that used to share music for free. For instance, I have an amazing collection of klezmer music, and old yiddish folk songs I found about 10 years ago on, I think it was, Limewire.

Sir_Tim_Berners-Lee_(cropped)(Oh for those days when the internet operated as naively as Tim Berners-Lee -see pic – intended it to! No one paid much attention to security. There was an excellent series on Radio 4 lat week, discussing how the internet started – before trolling and mobile phones turned it into something else. I’ve just looked it up so if you want to listen to it on iplayer in the next few weeks it’s called Aleks in Wonderland: The Story of the Internet)

Anyway, whilst uploading any security patched that were necessary, I had refused for years to upgrade my operating system, even tho Apple kept encouraging me to do so, with free upgrades, the latest being for Sierra – which seemed to me to be more interested in encouraging apple users to keep using apple products – and developing systems for moving data between their mac computer, i-pad, i-phone etc, and I’m one of those dinosaurs that doesn’t have a mobile phone.

What! How can I get along without one?  Well I do suffer sometimes for being so stubborn. I can’t phone someone to say I’ve got lost and I how do I get to their difficult to find farm, cos the directions they gave me left out something critical – and no I don’t have Sat Nav either. I just don’t like the way people are slaves to the new technology, and feel that the only way to walk down the pavement is to have a phone to their ear, and ignore everything around them.

And if you want to get hold of me you might just have to leave a message on my landline and I’ll get back to you when I’m home! Yes, I assume you’ve guessed by now – I’m now a pensioner! (And yes, the photo I use on this site, is well – out of date, but it’s the best one I have – smile)

So, anyway …….. The consensus of all those nice people I was talking to, and one of the Happiness Engineers, who couldn’t believe that I couldn’t see the Preview and Publish buttons that were Definately THERE, was that my operating system was no longer compatible with WordPress, and in fact, I have to confess, I was beginning to realise that myself. In the last few weeks, rather a lot of web pages I was using for my research into some new projects I have in mind wouldn’t open, I just got a blank grey page with a message from Safari saying that I didn’t have enuf security to open them – or something or other!

I had even tried moving to another browser – but none of them would let me download them, my system was no longer compatible! And yet I’d used one of them a few years ago quite happily – but I’d deleted it cos it took up took much space, and it was confusing me having two browsers – so I couldn’t even upgrade from the old version. I was going to have to change my ways!

47429422-cartoon-boy-flying-planeBut in the meantime, I did find a way round the problem, and published the post. It turned out that if I went to the list of my blogs, the draft version had some buttons below the title that I could click – and achieve “lift off”!

So, a few days ago, I decided I’d have to take the plunge, and upgrade. This was the right time to do it, cos I haven’t yet got around to listing all my stock, and whilst the customer flow is slow, if I had any problems, at least it wouldn’t impact my sales, and mess around with orders etc.

At first I thought I would do it slowly, there have been at least two or three versions before Sierra – but I couldn’t find out which versions were easily downloadable, and I would probably lose some of my data which ever one I chose.

So, OK, altho I think those adverts Apple have put out – talking to Siri – are really awful, and I don’t want to talk to a virtual robot, I might as well go the whole way, and make sure I’m up to date. I’ll even back up my system first and do it right.

No, of course it didn’t actually work like that. I started to try and use the “Time Machine” facility to back up the 6 years of information I have on this MacBook, with a 4G memory stick. I very quickly found out that I now had over 31G of data to back up, so I’d need to buy an external hard drive to do it! Once more, the system wouldn’t work for me, cos it wouldn’t accept a series of memory sticks, even if I did have enough of them!

So I just went ahead and did it! Looked up the instructions on Apple’s site and just clicked to upgrade. Hmm – I now live in the Welsh countryside, and my broadband is not the fastest. I think I clicked the button at about 8 pm, and the download wasn’t complete until 11 pm! I then had to open it and transfer it to my system – I fell asleep in the middle of the 2 hour process, and then wondered if I’d missed any important messages, and it had all gone wrong!

And when I dared to open it and look around and see what I’d got, everything seemed to be very slow. And I couldn’t quite work out what the difference was anyway. What I now had didn’t seem any better than Mountain Lion,

except that I could now SEE THE PREVIEW AND PUBLISH BUTTONS!

Then I found that none of my email accounts worked!

And the Calendar that held 6 years of useful information, had vanished, and all I had was a new one, that I couldn’t even find out how to enter any new info on – until I realised I had to set up a new named version first!

At 7.30 next morning, as soon as their helpline opened, I was straight onto my broadband provider to solve the problem of the 3 missing email accounts! I’d already been having problems, because I’d had one for the Ystalyfera house, and one for the cottage, and had kept them both going for a while, so that I could access any customers, and friends, wherever I was. Hmm – yes, I hear you saying, a mobile phone account might have been the better option – smile.

Anyway, I had closed the Ystalyfera account only 2 weeks ago, and they had promised to transfer the email address into my other contract – BUT THEY HADN”T DONE IT!

So apologies, anyone who was trying to get hold of me, and got a “this email address does not exist” reply – I haven’t gone out of business – I was pestering the broadband provider (who I will not name, but if you have my email address, you will know who it is) to reinstate it.

But oddly, altho the technical guys reinstated it, several times, the process of closing the account seemed to have a robot attitude, and shut it down again! I kept getting new emails from them telling me so!

And then I started getting worried emails, saying that I did not seem to have a payment plan for this email address, and could I please arrange a direct debit by clicking their link. I even got a message today, saying that the broadband speed on this account was very slow!

In the meantime, I was sending additional info to the case number concerned, and doing endless tests, proving the email address was defunct – altho once in a while I could send from it but not receive or reply to the test emails, and they were taking 24 hours to come back to me and say it seemed to be working fine when they tested it.

23756438-pannic-attack--the-words-in-white-color-on-cloud-of-red-words-on-orange-backgroundAnd, in the middle of the night, I realised that this was the email address that my Apple ID used, and that they may have been sending me emails about the new operating system (they hadn’t actually), and I wouldn’t get them!

Panic, panic – I went to change my email on the ID, and the page wouldn’t display – I was getting the same grey page on Safari, I’d been getting before I’d upgraded!

So I had to book a call from them, for the next day, but there wasn’t one available until lunchtime.

I would have been OK if when I phoned at 7.30 am, having had only an hour or two of sleep all night, the guy who I spoke to was able to achieve the simple task of putting the email accounts back effectively.

Well, he did, I followed his instructions and altho’ he tried to fob me off, and just send me instructions, I insisted he stay on the line while I went thro’ it with all three email accounts. Just as well I did, cos altho we apparently filled in the right information, of course, various things went wrong, the new operating system would not accept them, and even when it did, and the emails only worked for a bit, I had to delete the old set ups twice, and set up new accounts to get that far – only to go back to check the info, and find that some of it had disappeared and the system was blocking me from adding them back!

When I got off the phone to him an hour later, we both thought that everything was fine, and that I even had the old email address back! Nope – I didn’t!

In the meantime, while waiting for Apple to phone me, I fed the chicks that hatched a week ago, and went out and did somethings I really needed to do.

DSCF2130

thought you might like so see my buff sussex chicks!

Apple phoned when they said they would – great – not sure where they were phoning from, but it sounded like the USA.  First I had to set up a screen share to allow them to see my computer and tell me what to do. Apparently that didn’t work properly, and she couldn’t read my screen – and it took up a lot of my broadband, so it made everything extra slow. I still wanted to change the email address attached to the Apple ID, because I couldn’t be sure I’d get it back.

One of the three emails was working, so I thought it would be easy enough to use that one, but luckily, she checked for me, and it turned out, I’d used it 10 years ago to set up an early identity – and forgotten about it, and if I used it now, I would delete all my transactions and information for those 10 years! ie: any apps or software I’d paid for wouldn’t work!

We went thro the thought process of setting up a new email address, but I’d have had to go back to my email account and set it up and it wouldn’t be available immediately. I did have another one, but it wasn’t working – however she suggested that if I could get into the webmail on my account, I’d be able to access the confirmation email with the code to allow the change of ID. Phew!

That did work, but it had taken nearly an hour to do it! The site timed out before I could enter the code and we had to go thro it all again! She was very reassuring – telling me that it was a huge jump to go from Mountain Lion to Sierra in one go, and that my computer needed some time to sort it all out! Which was why it was running so slowly, and we both spent at lot of time looking at a little circle going round and round hoping it would work. Sometimes it didn’t.

I also asked her to look at the email accounts and see if she could find out why they weren’t working, but made the fatal mistake in asking her to ring me back later, as I’d had enuf of holding on to the phone, and trying to follow her instructions on the screen by then. She said she would – and I said – leave it a bit and get back to me in your own time.

Well, what happened was that I got another email from Apple, giving me an appointment with the phone for 3pm. So I messed around until then, and yes the phone did ring, but it was a man from Portugal – I asked – who knew nothing about what the problem was, and still thought I needed help with changing my ID – and I had to stop him from messing up all the hard work we’d just done!

He eventually put me thro to someone that was in Spain, or maybe it was S. America!, who, after some long time messing around with the settings for the email accounts, got me, on a shared screen again, to look up the instructions on the website of the email provider, and found they had given me the wrong instructions as to what code to put in one of the boxes!!!!

He helped me change them, and lo and behold – cross fingers – all email addresses seem to be working! Until the next time something goes wrong …….

I even found out, by a happy accident, that without my knowing I’d done it, my old calendar was on i-cloud, and I managed to reinstate it – WOW – Victory!

So I think, if you’ve stayed with me this long and got to the end of this long meander – you will agree with me that the last few days have been

a DIGITAL NIGHTMARE!

I’ve yet to explore my new system properly – just hope I don’t find any more glitches.

I might even get round to putting up some listings on ebay & etsy for you!

A-Z Challenge – Reflections on the Experience

Standard

A-to-Z+Reflection+[2015]+-+Lg Well it seems I haven’t quite finished this challenge – they also want my thoughts on the experience – smile

I had an interesting conversation with Arlee – of Tossing it Out – one of the originators of this challenge, on my post Xtra, Xtra, read all about it! – see the comment section!

survivor-atoz 2015 - sm_zpsmfnq4uov So this is how I feel about the Challenge – I just about survived it!

That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy parts of it, or find it stimulated me to write stuff I’d never had written if I hadn’t been challenged to write a post a day, following the alphabet – and some of those posts will soon be added to the i/sheet archive page …..but….

I do think that it is a very hard slog to post something every day, unless you just put up a joke a day, or something inconsequential – which wouldn’t suit either this crafts site or “the spare”, which is my other blog site – I split the posts between both sites, so that I wouldn’t have irrelevant subjects on this one – smile.

However, the admin for this challenge required that I show I was following the challenge on this site – so I had to clutter it up with a reference and the alphabet image for the posts I wrote on the spare!  I think I will delete those posts in a week or two, as they really do make this blog look messy – smile!

I did link up with a few new people I would never have come across otherwise, but I was quite surprised to find that my friendly comments to fellow A-Z ers were often not answered, and very few people came to my site if I hadn’t left them a comment.  I thought this challenge was about networking?

So my conclusion is, as I said in the Z post – that I will never, no never, do this again!

Arlee seems to think its a proof of stamina to get thro’ the challenge, but I view it differently – there is a great incentive to complete it because you look pretty silly if those alphabet images stop midway!   I was going thro’ the list of those who signed up for it the other day, and found quite a few who had stopped along the way, for whatever reason.  What I found heartbreaking was that in every one I found that had not finished the challenge – they had also stopped blogging!

The challenge seemed to have taken the fun out of it for them, and how were they going to continue, if they had to ‘write a note to teacher’ to say why they hadn’t done the rest of the challenge, and then go back to their original aims for their blog? And those Why’s could have been – a death in the family – a sudden overload of work (which I found I had, and sat up in the middle of the night to finish some of the blogs) – or just pure boredom with the medium of blogging!

There must be a more compassionate way to run this challenge?  What do you think?

PS: I just tried to leave a comment on Arlee’s site to let him know I had mentioned our earlier conversation, but he blogs on blogspot, and there is a convoluted method for non-blogspot bloggers to leave comments – this time it just wouldn’t let me publish the comment!  This is not the first time its happened!

XThis is the newz according to Julz!

Readers of this blog may have noticed I have a campaigning streak – I’m not sure what you think about it, but its in my genes!  When I was doing blogging101 in January, we were asked to pick a prompt, and write a post around it.

I chose “Never Surrender, and I wrote about my Dad.  You are welcome to click on the link and read it.  At the time I was feeling a little awkward about publishing a series of posts about the “cock ups” the Royal Mail were, and still are, making – and wasn’t sure whether I should keep them up.  Writing that post convinced me I should, however silly it made me look – smile.

I thought I would use this last week of the A-Z Challenge to write an update of the results – or not – of my little personal campaigns.

me messing around with a picture of postboxes

messing around with a picture of modern postboxes

I am vehemently against the privatisation of Royal Mail – as are may other people who rely on it.  Shares were offered at the end of 2013 and the price was far too low, which resulted in the ‘company’ ending up in the hand of the money men, who are simply interested in reselling them for a quick profit,  and not interested in providing a good service for their customers!

The public service had served us well since 1840, when the first postage stamps were issued – costing just one penny.  They are worth a lot more now!

Privatisation and the need to make a profit, has resulted in the loss of previously stable jobs, and a very unhappy staff.  Worse, the people now running it, have never worked within the system, but have been drafted in from other industries, so they know nothing about its traditions and how to make workable changes.  They have messed around with the pricing structure for the last couple of years, and made major mistakes.

close up of notice - last collection on saturday - 7 am, weekdays - 9 am!

close up of notice – last collection on saturday – 7 am, weekdays – 9 am!

It was a silly thing that got me started on this complaint!

I went to my nearest post box, to post some small orders, one Saturday morning at around 8 am, only to find that, without prior warning, there was a notice saying that the only collection on Saturdays would be at 7 am – ie I’d missed it!  Saturday collections have been at noon for EVER!

Worse, as I was on my way to Asda, and passed another post box, I stopped to look at the notice there, and it still said 12 noon, and the post box at Asda said 9.15am!  Even the guy who runs the local Post Office knew nothing about the change when I asked him!

There followed a series of encounters with Head Office, who were as obfuscating as they could be, and with the local Sorting Office, where I got laughed at.

Even sillier, I finally found out that the notices had been put up but the changes hadn’t happened yet!

You can follow the series of posts I wrote HERE if you can be bothered to – its a long read – smile. (You will have to scroll down to the bottom to see the first one, and then scroll upwards for the next instalment!

Although nothing specific came out of the fuss I made, a new sticker is to be seen on all the local post boxes, giving the phone number for any queries the public would like to make about collections etc.  I was very heartened to hear a whole section on complaints from all around the country about the change in collection times from rural postboxes,   on Radio 4’s programme, You & Yours, this week.  Whether much will happen after that exposure remains to be seen.

I still don’t know for sure when the collections are, and whether the changes have yet been put into effect- I wonder if they’d tell me if I phoned up the number on the sticker!

cropped-3vert-dry-stone-wall-version-2.jpg In January, I also wrote a post about the new VAT MOSS scheme, which seems to have been introduced to force large companies, like Amazon, to pay their fair share of tax, but is instead making it more difficult for small businesses, and especially craftspeople, to trade.  There have been various petitions, to the European Union, whose legislation this is, and to member country parliaments, but as far as I can tell, no one has done anything to change the scheme.  My plan to open a separate shop on etsy selling digital downloads of my old photographs is still on hold.

the large bin was replaced by the small bin

the large bin was replaced by the small bin

In February, the local council came and changed our large wheelie bins for small ones, apparently in an effort to get us to recycle more.

I was curious as to how much the new bins had cost and whether the old bins had been usefully recycled, so I asked them.

I did eventually get some answers, but did not pursue the issue to the bitter end – it was enough to be able to show that people all over the world had read my blogs about this.

The Council Officials were prepared for some criticism on this policy, but they do not yet have a culture of recognising that freedom of information means transparency and accountability.  It would be nice if they got into the habit or publishing information like this without having to be cajoled into doing so!

Still they have come a long way from the petty officialdom that WAS once the prevailing culture – and unfortunately still is in many parts  of the world.  If I lived in India, China or Russia, to name but a few of the countries that abound with petty corruption – I might have found myself in prison just for asking those questions, or at the very least, would think nothing of having to pay a bribe to a local official to get my rubbish collected at all!

You can read the sequence of posts here.

My most recent campaign has stalled.

Ironically, its about WordPress and the changes they have made, and they seem to be the least open to discussion – or, if you like, on a par with the Royal Mail!

It would seem that Matt, who is a co-founder of WordPress thought it would be nice to be able to post short blogs from his mobile, so he wrote a program for it.

He thinks we all should use it – whether we are posting from our computers, i-pads or phones – but it doesn’t work!  I call it Edit Lite. See my postTest on Chrome“.

I spend a great deal of time formatting my posts, so that they are readable, and was finding that when I went back to edit them, the formatting got screwed up.

I was most upset to find this had happened to the last post of the Big Bin Swap series – see above – just at the time I had sent out invitations to the ‘Big Wigs’ from all the Local Councils to read it!

I have fixed it now, so the only thing wrong with it is that a paragraph in the middle has been squashed up.  I purposely haven’t been back to do that on the ‘Test on Chrome’.

I have tried contacting Matt – but he’s unreachable.  I put up a couple of posts, trying to get his attention – see “Message to Matt – 1 & 2“, but answer was there none, not even thro’ the very helpful Happiness Engineer – still makes me laugh, that title!

What she has told me is that they haven’t been able to fix it yet!  Edit Lite is the culprit, and we are being steered towards using it, whether we have up-to-date mobile phones or not!  I’m one of those who doesn’t!

The Classic Editor is now almost impossible to find.  However, I have followed the advice the ‘HE’ gave me, and returned to the Blog Post Page every time, religiously, where Classic Editor can be found by clicking “Add New” at the top of the page, and if I want to edit a post, I do it in that page – and have not had any real problems since!

I am steering well clear of any contact with Edit Lite – it has caused me too much grief!

I am not the only one who has had problems with this, and there are various forums and groups out there that I found when I was trying to get answers, who are extremely angry about the changes that are being made.

AND – it occurs to me that WordPress, of all organisations, should be listening to their customers, and be concerned about how the platform they provide performs.

The internets’ greatest strength is that it allows FREE SPEECH, and has been an important tool for the implementation of those ideals – its a shame to find WordPress, inadvertently perhaps,  acting in a similar fashion to those old fashioned, all powerful dictators!

message to matt mullenweg: Part 2

This is a continuation of my previous post http://julzcrafts.com/2015/03/31/message-to-matt-mullenweg-co-founder-of-wordpress/

I have made sure this time that I didn’t copy the title off my original post and hope that I can manage to keep the format readable!

To continue – and I will try and be as brief as possible, altho that may not be possible – I went looking for someone to tell about the formatting problems I have been having.  If you start off in ‘classic editing mode’, and once you have saved and previewed your post, you do not check that you have got back to classic editing mode, the system automatically transfers you to “edit lite” which may not be a problem at first, but has certainly been extremely problematic if you need to go back to that already published post to edit something or add some new information.  See my post “test on chrome”

Now the “Happiness Engineers” (HE from now on), have been as helpful as they can be, but are loathe to take this to anyone who needs to know – the formatting problem eventually has been referred to the technical crew, but the other stuff mentioned in my last attempt to tell you about this, was not, and no explanation of why it happened was ever forthcoming.

So MATT – I thought you ought to know, because it seems it was you that have designed “edit lite”

and have proudly displayed it on one of the posts about themes etc on wordpress.com.  The idea of creating a fast and easy editing mode is fine – but why take away our choices.  You are now presented with “edit lite” when you start any post and classic mode cannot be found anywhere.  OK the HE’s now told me how to get back to it and stay in it – see: “test on chrome” but why should I have to ASK them how to do it.

I left you two comments on your website Matt –

hi Matt – sorry to barge in here, but it seems that its the only place to get to you – if you are not still involved in WordPress, apologies, but I think someone should tell you that they are making a mess of it at the moment and there are a lot of angry people around.

we don’t like edit lite

we don’t like being forced to use it

we don’t like the classic editor being hidden from us and only available by tricks

and I don’t like my posts being mangled!

http://julzcrafts.com/2015/03/24/test-on-chrome/

if I have the right person – found your site on wikipedia – then please do something about it

and please reply to me, even if you prefer not to post his message

thanks

AND

I actually watched this video, all the way thro, waiting for something stunningly different from everything I’ve already heard – the comic approach was it.

It always amazes me that the US is so behind the rest of the world with the idea of conserving our assets. Even in a small place in Wales, the Council have put in place new measures to encourage recycling – see

http://julzcrafts.com/2015/02/03/a-slice-of-life-the-big-bin-swap-recycling-in-the-swansea-valley-wales/

you will also see that I didn’t agree with the sneaky way they replaced the bins, so I called them out on it. The follow up blog, can be reached thro the one above, and undortunately it suffered from some problems with the new editing system.

I left a message for you Matt about this – could you please answer this, or I may find I have to use the same tactics – smile

The first one has disappeared, but I did get an automatic email giving me access to that post only, the second one is still awaiting moderation at present.

I did think of sending you an email, but there is a note on the contact page that lists how many hundreds of emails you have in your pending file, so thats a “no brainer”

I also asked the HE, when I was asked to note every action I took when writing posts from now on,

(I don’t think I’ll bother with this one – its written using my default Safari Browser and I am making sure I am using the Classic Mode, as per instructions)

to pass on the comments below – think this might be a faster way to do it – or perhaps you won’t even see THESE MESSAGES!

dr-seuss_be-who-you-are “Whilst that may be ‘my fault’ I doubt if I’d be the only one not to think of using the toggle – and polls & forms are NOT included – what someone in wordpress hasn’t understood is the 1st rule of business

THINK LIKE A CUSTOMER

most of the bloggers have not done the 101 course and are hesitant about using the formats, and there is NOTHING that I saw that said – you may choose to write your post on this edit sheet, which gives you less options – or whatever gloss you want to give it – or you can choose these other sheets which will do this – but maybe are not as “easy” to use.

If you get presented with something, you take it at face value – I just assumed you’d stopped people using the classic one for some silly reason only known to your designers – and in the mood I was already in, it made me angry!

The instructions for choosing what format to use should be on each edit page, every time, so people can make their own choices, and for people who didn’t even know about the variations – which I didn’t at first.

I knew you were changing things round, as there IS a prompt to use the simpler version on the classic one, but there isn’t anything on the simpler version to allow you to switch to classic.

Its just a lack of thinking by your design team, but its caused me a load of trouble – and I have no intention of going back to that post and correcting all my assumptions – they were honest ones.

If you want to do it, that’s fine – you are welcome to comment as well as anyone else.

I would suggest that you also put a link on each of these pages, to full instructions on how to use them – then maybe I would have seen the ‘obvious’!

And why is there not an email notification to EVERY wordpress blogger to tell them of the changes you are making – why hide the fact that you are making changes – it only confuses people when something they are happy using, suddenly disappears.

I always say, if someone doesn’t answer a question – they have something to hide.

Neath Port Talbot didn’t answer me questions first time round – if they had, I would never have published that post – and it has embarrassed them -which they deserved, because they tried hiding stuff. I know I didn’t get all the answers, but I have suggested they set up a page on the website that gives that kind of information, so everyone can see it.

Its actually good PR if you admit to having some problems – smile!

thanks for taking up my suggestion that you contact people who have left comments on the blog about their problems – I have left new replies to everyone who commented to alert them to the update, and on the two that you told me you contacted, have acknowledged that you are being pro -active – so I’m not always critical! smile

nuff for now – If you keep this thread open, I will come back to you when I next blog to tell you what is going on – good or bad!
